MORE THAN MONEY: The Quest for Meaningful Work

Ask anyone what they want most from a job, and ‘money’ usually tops the list. Fair enough, the bills (and child support) won’t pay themselves. But for many of us, finding meaning in our work runs a close second.

We want jobs that matter.

A McKinsey study found that 82% of employees believe it’s important for their company to have a purpose they connect with, ideally one that benefits society. When companies have a strong purpose, employees feel purposeful too. It’s a ripple effect.

The desire for meaningful work is relatively new. In the past, work was mostly about survival. As living standards improved, people began wanting more. Gen Z leads this movement: a Monster survey found 70% of Gen Z value purpose over pay.

They want work that makes a difference.

THE PANDEMIC
COVID-19 made many of us rethink our lives, including our jobs. We asked, ‘Does what I do make any difference?’ For some, the answer was ‘no,’ fueling the “Great Resignation” as people left unfulfilling roles.

WHAT IS MEANING ANYWAY?
What makes work meaningful varies and is quite personal: for some it’s making a positive impact, or using unique skills, flexible hours to coach the footy, building quality relationships, or simply feeling valued. Clearly, our work is more than just a paycheck, it’s a reflection of who we are and what we stand for.

WHAT CAN COMPANIES DO?
Companies that seek to understand and nurture this desire for meaning and make it personal to their staff will attract and keep top talent, and build committed teams. (Think feedback sessions and surveys, career development conversations, listening and providing genuine, meaningful opportunities), When people feel they matter, they give their best, not just for the job, but for themselves.

True appreciation isn’t about trendy perks. (e.g.: bean bags, slippery slides and ping pong). It’s about showing your people, every team member, their effort makes a difference and recognising their contributions in genuine and personal ways.

Because in the end, that’s what makes work truly meaningful.
